Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to sign up for the entire summer?
No. You can sign up for as many, or as little amount of weeks as you’d like, based on availability.
Where does my registration fee go? Do I have to pay it for each week?
Your $30 registration fee is a one-time fee assessed at enrollment. The fee remains $30 no matter how many weeks you enroll in. One week or ten weeks, the fee is a flat $30. This fee covers the camper start up pack which includes a Shawnee Parks & Recreation drawstring bag, camper t-shirts, and more!
What does a typical day at camp look like?
Camp Shawnee will run similarly to other full-day summer camps in the area. A typical day will look like the schedule below, but it is subject to change based on a variety of factors including the weather.
  • 7:30am-9:00am - camp drop-off: camper selected free play activities (board games, building blocks, drawing, open gym activities, etc.)
  • 9:00am-12:00pm – Themed programming: Campers will rotate through daily activities created around the week’s theme. This timeframe could also include a field trip. Activities can include:
  • Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM) – Ex: building competitions, experimentations, etc.
  • Creativity – Ex: drawing, painting, clay, collages etc.
  • Project-Based Learning – Ex: create a business, build a super hero diorama, or build a pinball machine etc.
  • Importance of Play – Ex: active/structured free play, large motor activities, sports, etc.
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm - Lunch & down time. After eating lunch, campers will have some downtime to read or play board games.
  • 1:00pm-4:00pm - Themed programming: Campers will rotate through daily activities created around the week’s theme. On pool days, this timeframe will include pool time. This time could also include field trip time.
  • 4:00pm-5:30pm - camp pick-up: camper selected free play activities (board games, building blocks, drawing, open gym activities, etc.)
Will campers be at the Civic Centre all day?
Campers will visit the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center twice per week and have a field trip once per week. Swimming will generally take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with field trips on Wednesdays. Any off-site activities will take place between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm.
Do I need to purchase a pool pass?
No, admission to the pool is included in your camp fees. If you want to swim as a family beyond that, you would follow the normal aquatics admission fees which are available online.
Where will campers go on field trips?
The field trip schedule will be finalized closer to camp. Field trips will take place throughout the Kansas City Metro. Campers will be transported via bus. All field trip fees are included in your camp registration.
Is food provided?
Campers will bring a lunch each day. No refrigeration or microwaves are available. Campers will be provided two snacks per day.
Will there be opportunities for Swim Lessons?
Swim lessons for Camp Shawnee participants will be available at the Thomas A. Soetaert Aquatic Center. Camp counselors will take participating campers to and from lessons during camp hours. Space will be limited. Registration information will be sent to registered campers in May.
What does Enrichment Camps mean?
Shawnee Parks & Recreation offers additional camps with our community-based partners at the Shawnee Civic Centre. These opportunities are enrichment camps that are usually 9:00am-12:00pm and/or 1:00pm-4:00pm. These camps will open to the public in March. Registered Camp Shawnee families will get an early chance to sign up for these in addition to the traditional day camp if they want to. This is an opportunity for your camper to attend a specialty camp if they wish, but is not required.
Will my child be "missing out" at either the Day Camp or the Enrichment Camp?
Not at all! Each day at Camp Shawnee will be full with fun activities and programming. Some families are looking for additional programming where their camper can take a "deep dive" into a specific theme (basketball, chess, game programming, etc.). Shawnee Parks & Recreation has offered specialty enrichment camps for years and we wanted to open this opportunity up to our Camp Shawnee participants as well.
