Career Opportunities

Firefighters undertake diverse responsibilities encompassing fire prevention, suppression, emergency rescue, basic life support, and first aid, often in hazardous conditions. These professionals work under the direction of a Fire Captain and must strictly adhere to safety regulations to ensure the well-being of all individuals involved. Initial training equips firefighters with foundational skills, and continuous knowledge development is essential to excel in this role.

The City is served by four stations: John B. Glaser Fire Station #71 at 6501 Quivira, Station #72 at 5840 Renner, Station #73 at 6805 Hedge Lane, and Station #74 at 5300 Woodsonia. These stations are strategically located to facilitate efficient emergency response within the community.

Recruit Firefighter: $51,300
1 Year Firefighter: $56,430 - $57,456
2 Year Firefighter: $60,944 - $62,355
3 Year Firefighter: $65,211- $67,041

5 Year Firefighter: $73,961 - $78,186

*Employees who are Firefighter-Paramedics will received a 10% stipend on top of their base pay.
*Lateral Firefighters are eligible for up to five years of full-time paid experience.

 

Minimum Qualifications for Firefighter-EMT and Firefighter-Paramedic

A Firefighter-EMT must possess the following prior to application deadline:

  • High school or general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Certification under the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and/or Kansas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)*
  • Successful completion of the following National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) OR International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certifications though the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute or equally recognized and accredited organization:
    • Firefighter I  
    • Firefighter II 
    • HAZMAT Awareness 
    • HAZMAT Operations  

*Certification as a State of Kansas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced (A) is required by the end date of the internal academy that is conducted post-hire.

A Firefighter-EMT must provide the following at or prior to the Staff Interview:

  • Certified Physical Agility Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months*

*Candidates who are actively employed as a Firefighter will not be required to provide an up to date CPAT.

A Firefighter-Paramedic must possess all of the above, in addition to:

  • Certification as a Paramedic through the State of Kansas.
  • Must be credentialed as a paramedic through the Johnson County Office of the Medical Director.

Firefighter-Paramedics who meet the above criteria are also eligible for a one-time bonus up to $10,000.  The bonus will be awarded upon completion of the probationary period.

Work Schedule:
Shift fire personnel work a regular pattern of 24-hour shifts in a 28 day work period. This includes: 24 hours on shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.), 24 hours off duty, 24 hours on duty, 24 hours off duty, 24 on duty, 96 hours off duty (this schedule is often referred to as the "California Berkley Shift").
