Residents can have up to two garage sales per calendar year at their residence. The City does not issue permits for garage sales.
Regulations
- Must be confined to your garage, house, driveway or yard. Do not cross into a neighbor's yard or public right-of-way.
- Most residents advertise garage sales over a three day period. The maximum is five days.
- Garage sales can be conducted between 8:00 a.m and 8:00 p.m.
- Everything should be cleaned up and removed from the driveway, yard or outside area to an inside location by 8:00 p.m. each day.
- Signs are permitted as long as they are taken down one day after the sale. One sign is allowed at the site of the sale and two signs are allowed off the premises of the sale. Signs should not exceed three feet by three feet and cannot be illuminated. Signs must be located at least 10 feet from the edge of the street pavement or behind any existing public sidewalks.
Prohibited Sign Locations
- Utility poles - Do not put signs on utility poles or street signs.
- Park Ground- Do not put signs on park ground.
- Private Property - Do not place signs on private property unless you have permission of the owner. If you do not have permission, either the owner or the City will remove and dispose of the sign.
- Highway Rights-of-Way- Do not place signs on highway rights-of-way.
Signs placed in any of these areas will be confiscated and disposed of by the Police Department, Public Works or the Parks and Recreation Department. In addition, you could be subject to a $500 fine. A complete list of regulations can be found in Chapter 5.32 of the Shawnee Municipal Code.
