Shawnee Police Department Achieves Accreditation
Posted on 05/07/2019
The Shawnee Police Department announced it received an award of accreditation through the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) at the annual CALEA conference held in Huntsville, AL on May 4, 2019.

May Michelle Distler, City Manager Nolan Sunderman and Plolice Chief Rob Moser oined other members of the Shawnee Police Department to receive the esteemed award. Shawnee Police Accreditation Manager Greg Collins spearheaded the three-year process that aims to raise standards by improving departmental policy, strengthening crime prevention and control capabilities, establishing fair personnel practices and increasing community and staff confidence in agency.

"Obtaining national accreditation through CALEA compliments our strive towards continuous organizational improvement," said Shawnee Police Chief Rob Moser. "Our agency has raised standards, allowing us to provide better service which leads to our ultimate mission of creating a safer community."

"Our Police Department is a shining example of how hard work and determination will help achieve anything you set you mind to," said Mayor Michelle Distler. " I am beyond proud that the Shawnee Police Department is joining our Public Works and Fire Departments in achieving accreditation. They are committed to continuing to provide the best service and care for our community."

The Shawnee Police Department is now part of approximately 5% of the nearly 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States to earn CALEA accreditation. We are the 10th agency in the state of Kansas to achieve accreditation, and one of only two of the 16 local agencies in Johnson County to earn the award.

CALEA is the only nationwide credentialing body for law enforcement. CALEA is a non-profit organization that formed in 1979. Agencies voluntarily enter into the CALEA process and open their agencies to inspection from CALEA assessors in order to verify that the agency meets the standards and best practices set forth by CALEA

A local award ceremony will be held at a later date.
